Review: Daughter of Smoke & Bone

Daughter of Smoke and Bone (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #1)Around the world, black hand prints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil's supply of human teeth grows dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she's prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands"; she speaks many languages—not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she's about to find out.

When one of the strangers—beautiful, haunted Akiva—fixes his fire-colored eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love. It did not end well.
Alooooootttt better than expected! I had been seeing this novel around a ton, and although I try to avoid cover-shopping, the cover threw me off about what was truly burried inside this fantastic novel. I totally thought it would be about people in feather masks in some weird cult, but I was dearly mistaken. This book is a piece of Art; The characters, plot, past & present are extremely well though out. It's super easy to notice when an author puts in endless amounts of effort into their characters, and tweaks the plot to perfection- and Taylor did just that.

A story of forbidden love, loss & discovery, Daughter of Smoke & Bone tells a story of 17 year old Karou living in Prague. Like a normal girl, Karou attends Art school, has a best friend whom she fools around with, and an ex-boyfriend that broke her heart just when she thought it was love. Karou is a normal girl, except for the second part of her life, where she runs errands for the wishmonger, Brimestone- which consist of travelling to different countries in a blink of an eye through a door whom is guarded by Medusas equivilent- A snake lady named Issa,  & collecting teeth from traders that would give anything to see their deepest wish come true. Karou always felt out of place in both worlds, like a piece of her was missing; that is until she meets an angel named Akiva that brings contentment, longing & destruction into her world, all at the same time.

Honestly, this would have been a 5 Star novel if there was a little more depth. The plot is complex and all, but I feel that the transition between her life without Akiva & her life with is a little too fast. If there would have been a litttttle more discovery between the two before the huge secret is blown at the reader I would have loved it way more.
However, that being said, this novel is still extremely well written & I do think everyone should give it a shot. Taylor is a GREAT author & you really get drawn into the story from the beginning.

The instant attraction between Karou & Akiva & the back story when she realizes who she truly is... it's such a lovely story. I almost cried at the part where Madigal was in the cell for execution. The intensity, yet innocence of their relationship is heart wretching. I truly loved it.

This is truly a story of forbidden love & self discovery, and showcases that the way one person chooses to live can impact everyone around them- and affect many generations to come.

Happy reading!
